[Video feed drifts lazily about New Bark Town. I'm sure you've seen it all before. An amused, disembodied voice begins speaking.]

All right. Obviously, there isn't enough room in this town for an asylum, so I won't bother trying to check into one.

[The camera lingers briefly on Mom's house. The unspoken implication is 'or trying to get others committed.'. The camera comes to focus on Youji's face. His smile is pleasant and friendly.]

I heard the 'Welcome to the world of Pokemon, they're fantastic,' spiel, so elaboration on what's going on is unnecessary. Far too sober to make sense of it anyway. I'd much rather hear about how you're dealing with this.

[Sweeten the prospect and tell me there's hot girls involved?]

You can still say 'welcome' if it makes you feel better. Goodness knows, I won't deprive a fellow sufferer.

It's not so hard to miss, especially when you've been in the same position before.

[Sorry, Youji, you'll probably find that most of the girls here bite]

Well...welcome, then. [Pause] Has anyone told you anything about this place yet?

Oh, bits and pieces. And this little... [what do I call it?] creature won a fight against a round, red thing with leaf-tendrils growing out of its head.

Capture creatures, set them upon each other in a vicious fight to the death, hope the authorities will continue looking the other way, sound about right?

[The Smoochum nestled under his arm squirms a bit, reaching for Youji's sunglasses and trying to either lick them or stare at her reflection. Youji holds her a bit further away and makes a face.]

Dammit, quit--anyway. Do these Pokemon count among those you're so blessed to get to know? Mine is rather cute, but we're working on her manners...

...No, that's...not quite right.

[He frowns. Either someone was pulling the newcomer's leg or there had been a misunderstanding somewhere] Check inside your pack. You should have a book on pokemon--the creatures in this world--and also one of these. [Here he holds up his pokedex] This device is really useful, so...hold on tight to it. Just point it at a pokemon and it should give you more specific information.

The trainers here battle, but they aren't to the death. Most trainers here don't appreciate mistreatment of pokemon. [His tone, and the deliberate eyebrow-raise should be enough to tell the man Merlin's one of those trainers]

There might have been some sarcastic exaggeration in there somewhere... uplifting to see that Pokemon rights' advocates are willing and zealous, however.

If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't believe something this tiny and... pink could fight at all. I'm not sure I like the idea.

[He looks at the Pokedex. Smoochum meanwhile looks mildly insulted.]

The magic oracle with all the answers, hm? That's useful. Are we sure it recognizes every animal it comes across? You know, insects go extinct in the Amazon before they're even discovered.

I don't think any of us have had issues before.

[He smiles at the Smoochum upon seeing the expression it's wearing] Hard to believe, isn't it? The pokemon really are something.

Something else, maybe. Who knew licking was a form of attack? Must get dull fast, though. How many times can you Pound someone into submission?

Battling's not all there is to Johto or Pokemon. Try getting to know the trainers around here--it should make things a bit more interesting.

Don't the Chinese consider that a curse?

I'm getting to know you, aren't I? That's a start.

The...Chinese? [Puzzlement, then some understanding crosses his face] There's...something else I should tell you. The trainers who have been pulled here are all from different worlds and times. [He tilts his head] I'm actually from quite far in the past if you compare me to the others, so there are still some things I haven't heard of.

[Now he smiles] I'd call it a start, yeah.

[Looks again at his darling little Smoochum.]

I suppose if I believe in these little creatures... go ahead and try me. Where and when are you from, sir?

[Making a face] First off, none of that "sir" business. I'm just Merlin.

I cannnot tell you when, exactly, but others have told me it was quite some time ago. [Pause] Have you ever heard of Camelot?

[Ignoring the rest of that... Youji answers cautiously.]

Here and there, I have. It's... quite far away from where I'm from.

[And... well...]

There you go, then. We had nothing similar to the...technology [He still stumbles over that word a bit] that Johto has. It's all rather overwhelming sometimes.

If you're from the future, though, you should be all right. I've been told there are similar devices people are familiar with.

Similar, yeah, but my cell phone is a bit... clunkier than this.

[Manx only just introduced a video phone, and that was probably only because she was Powell's hostage... The American army might be able to pull that off, but it's still a few years in the future for Kritiker.]

You sound like you're doing fine, though. We're talking and nothing blown up on your end.

[He grins] That, my friend, is solely due to my being here for the past few months or so. Were I a newcomer like you, I probably wouldn't be holding my Gear the right side up.

Don't say 'months.' That is a terrible thing to say to someone new and confused. I might actually start thinking I'll be here for months.

[A sad smile crosses his face now] I've been here nearly three months now, and some of my friends have been here longer.

I won't lie to you; none of us have found a way back home just yet.

I suppose that makes sense. Would you still be here if you could leave on demand, after all?
