- ★ NAME: Karolina Dean
- ★ AGE: 16ish (She had a driver's license in her origin story, and at least one of her teammates has had a birthday since then)
- ★ CANON & CANON POINT: Marvel-616/Runaways, after Runaways vol.3 #6
- ★ CANON INFORMATION: http://marvel.wikia.com/Runaways_(Earth-616)
- ★ PERSONALITY:
Karolina is bright. While her intelligence isn't really remarked upon, she is generally a good-feelings kind of person. Her parents were very cheerful around her, at one point lamenting that they were the only happy couple in Hollywood, and Karolina shows this. She is harmonious when she reasonably can be, and she has a strong social conscience. Her parents were the type to get arrested during civil protests and she continues to be the kind of person who prefers to act when she sees someone in trouble. She uses the "with the great power" argument on her friend Molly at one point, and when she sees a child bride being abused by her husband during a time travel jaunt, she tries to convince the girl to run away with her and her friends.
At the same time, she's not really a "look at me" person. She's a tall, pretty blonde, but she doesn't talk about herself. She generally keeps her problems to herself, although, being a teenager, she isn't above the occasional emotional outburst. She takes the knowledge that her hippie movie star parents are actually evil alien criminals extremely badly. Her feelings are hurt on a very primal level, both that her parents aren't who she thought they were and that she isn't who she thought she was.
Learning that her parents lied to her about being aliens upsets her, and while she does take a good swing at her mom, that her mom tells her they can't use their powers against each other makes her turn her upset against herself. She goes through a pretty extreme moodswing the first time she takes her "Lucy in the Sky" form: her thought process goes straight from "I hope our parents do kill us now!" to "Oh my God, I can fly!" with a huge grin, still with tear streaks. Literally, one thought flows straight into the other.
Later on, she does go back to being suicidal, and being forced into a darkness dimension that negates her powers makes her briefly ecstatic. But this is a phase born of confusion and turmoil. She supports her friends when they decide to stop their parents, adopting them as her new family.
At the beginning of the storyline following their parents' defeat, when someone accuses Karolina of being a mutant, she responds with "I'm an extraterrestrial, and proud of it!" She does grow to love her abilities, and when she's relaxing at home, she prefers to do so in her full glow form. She considers staying her powered-down form to be hiding who she really is, and while she'll do so in public to avoid the authorities, having to lie about who she is after being lied to about it so long doesn't sit well with her.
She's also not the kind who's happy about hiding her homosexuality, or the fact that her fiancee is a different species from herself. Again, she'll do it to avoid Iron Man and Captain America sending her back to foster care, but she's more or less done with the angst and turmoil, and would rather use her experience to help others.
- ★ COURT ALLIANCE: Seelie.
- ★ ABILITIES: Karolina is a type of alien called a Majesdanian, which gives her unique abilities. The planet Majesdane is hidden inside the corona of a star, and Majesdanians derive energy from sunlight -- to the point that drinking her blood is fatal to vampires, for one thing. If Karolina uses up her glow, she is unable to recharge at night. Her power can be negated by physical contact a particular metal that is not named in the series, though she has a medical alert bracelet made of it. It also cannot be used to harm her parents, although other Majesdanians have so attacked her.
1. Solar energy manipulation. Karolina has two forms: one that looks like a default human, and one that looks like a humanoid glowing mass of cascading rainbow light. In her latter, powered up form, the cascading rainbow light can be concentrated into beams she fires from her hands, shields to protect herself and her allies, and crude restraints. (Crude because we never see her using the restraint technique herself, although others of her species do.)
2. Flight. In her powered-up form, she can fly.
Karolina is used to living as a runaway, so she has experience keeping a low profile and shoplifting discreetly, although she'd rather not.

[Wobbly video opens up on a shot of a cattleya orchid. It’s very pretty. Zoom out to see that it is held by Youji, and he is smiling. His Jynx, Darling, stands next to him, crooning along with the others of her ilk, and when Tesla the Ampharos finally gets the camera steady, he starts talking, a bit enthusiastic.]
It’s really been such beautiful weather. I keep expecting all of the flowers to come up.
[He twirls the orchid between his fingers; it looks absent-minded, but it’s something he’s practiced.
Meanwhile, Fi the Vulpix scampers on screen, clutching a Togepi doll in her mouth. Closer inspection will reveal a matching doll at Darling’s feet, and there’s one each for Ariel the Feebas, Momoe the Glameow, even Tesla.]
It’s been so difficult to just… contain myself, I felt like if the flowers wouldn’t bloom, there had to be something I could give people, yes? Maybe you’ve found a present delivered by a friendly Skarmory?
[He brings the orchid to his face, inhales the scent, and lays it aside.]
If you have, I can only hope it’ll make you happy.

[This is what is looking at you, right into the Pokegear, blue eyes wide with wonder. It has been following Youji most of the day, and he has decided to name her Stephanie. Do not ask him to explain this. He can't. He just likes the name.]
Here you are, girls.
[Down the line, Youji's entire team each receive a Lemonade. Youji has Ariel, the Feebas, under his arm and holds hers while she drinks.]
Stephanie--
Audi?
--would you like Audrey better? Hmm. You seem like you'd prefer Breakfast at Tiffany's to Roman Holiday.
Audino!
...Stephanie it is. Now tell me. How did you come to be here?
Audi audino!
I can appreciate wanting to be cryptic, but if you have a trainer looking for you, I'd rather you find them.
You know? Not that we don't accord well together, but--
Audino.
...you're not even listening, are you.
[Youji sighs and drains his own Lemonade.]
Anyone want seconds?
[OOC: Dialogue: Red = Aya, Green = Ken, Purple = Youji. Warnings for swearing and one really bad sex joke.]
[Movement. Momoe's whiskers twitch as she senses... movement. Narrowing her eyes, she can see two clumsy humans sneaking into her master's room. There's a brief moment where she considers attacking, but it passes; it's just Ken and Aya, two of her master's friends. They're being incredibly quiet, and Aya has something in his hands... hm. She leaps from her place at the foot of Youji's bed and turns on his Pokegear, focusing it on the sight of him lying face down in bed, pillow clamped over his head and sheets kicked far enough back to show he's only wearing a pair of black sweatpants. For all intents and purposes, he is dead to the world.]
( Just how dead... )
[Once sure his friends are well out of earshot, Youji takes the Pokegear and fixes the security so that they and Mamoru can't hear what he says next, should they go turn theirs on.]
"I will be taking any and all suggestions for revenge."
[He smirks and shuts off the feed.]

[Youji's somewhere along Route 30, with a proud-looking Smoochum. Darling's earned a couple levels today and has decided to gloat by blowing kisses into the PokeGear. Her trainer, meanwhile, is studying a type matchup chart and muttering to himself.]
I suppose it makes sense if you've ever seen a bird fly into a power line...
[Darling nudges his leg insistently. He's about to brush her off when. Oh wait. PokeGear is recording, isn't it? Charming smile on, and he picks Darling up and cradles her in one arm for good measure. See, aren't they adorable?]
Some advice if anyone's got the time? You see, my little one is eager to try the Gym Challenge.
[Darling tries to kiss the lens; Youji takes it out of her hands.]
Really, I'm not much for fighting. Don't really like how she keeps insisting on fighting these wild creatures, and I really fear for her safety when she goes up against other, trained Pokemon.
[He looks at her with slightly exaggerated fondness. Darling looks back at him like he's crazy, before kissing his nose.]
So... those of you who have defeated the first Gym Leader, how did you do it? Those of you who haven't, do you want to? I'm only agreeing to it because Darling here is an Ice-type, and apparently birds migrating south for winter equals a type advantage in this asylum.
Really, anyway I can keep my little Amazon princess happy and provide for her safety is greatly appreciated. Looking forward to any advice.

Have you had any luck finding my brand of cigarettes? Or beer? Or an easygoing nurse? I might actually get on that job hunt if you found the nurse.

[Video feed drifts lazily about New Bark Town. I'm sure you've seen it all before. An amused, disembodied voice begins speaking.]
All right. Obviously, there isn't enough room in this town for an asylum, so I won't bother trying to check into one.
[The camera lingers briefly on Mom's house. The unspoken implication is 'or trying to get others committed.'. The camera comes to focus on Youji's face. His smile is pleasant and friendly.]
I heard the 'Welcome to the world of Pokemon, they're fantastic,' spiel, so elaboration on what's going on is unnecessary. Far too sober to make sense of it anyway. I'd much rather hear about how you're dealing with this.
